Riverina

Equally as famous for it's agriculture, the Riverina Regions' hospitality is second to none. With attractive tree-lined street, the township of Narrandera is a contrast to the plains that surround. Long known as a 'meeting point', it is also the junction of the Sturt and Newel Highways and an interesting blend of both historical and modern buildings. On the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, Narrandera provides a welcome rest for travelers from Sydney (549kms), Melbourne (428kms), Adelaide (852kms) and Canberra (341kms). However, with fine dining and boutique shopping, make sure you leave enough time to explore the towns' many historic buildings and area landmarks. For the keen anglers or those just wanting to learn more about the areas' diverse ecology, The John Lake Centre is the heart of Australia's freshwater fisheries research. A productive hatchery providing fingerlings of four native fish species (Murray Cod, Trout Cod, Golden Perch and Silver Perch) to rivers both locally and throughout the State. Meet some of the 'locals' - the Murray Cray, Murray Rainbow Fish and the endangered purple spotted Gudgeon.Wagga Wagga is NSW largest inland city and, as such, is a hub for transport, military and agriculture, Kapooka being home to Australia's Army Recruitment Centre. Once again, known for its' friendly welcome, Wagga Wagga will delight in so many ways. For the art lovers, the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery houses paintings from some of Australia's most famous artists, whilst the National Art Glass Gallery has a renowned collection of glass art. If natures' art appeals, the area is also a haven for birdwatchers and bushwalkers alike. 'The Rock', a 360m rocky outcrop just outside of the town, boasts splendid views to Mt Kosciuszko. The historic town of Lockhart is known for the 'Spirit of the Land' festival. Held yearly, the National Farm Arts Sculpture Award showcases the talents of both local and national artists. And be sure not to miss the famous 'Dog on the Tuckerbox' - five miles from Gundegai. In a town most famous for its canine outpost, you will also find many heritage listed buildings and, once again, that warm Riverina welcome in Gundegai. The sports enthusiast will delight in Cootamundra, the birthplace of Sir Donald Bradman and a visit the restored cottage Birthplace Museum is a must. So too is a visit to the Temora Aviation Museum. This fine collection of historical military aircraft is maintained in airworthy condition and is surely one of the most informative displays to be found. A tour of the Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory is also highly recommended, the organic products too good to refuse. Perhaps this is the secret to the happy faces of the locals? So, why not come make some new friends? And, at the end of each day, you can relax in your fine Bed and Breakfast Accommodation in the welcoming Riverina Region.
